Grapes for Sauvignon Vajgen are sourced from a steep southerly oriented Vajgen vineyard just few hundred meters from our winery.
After aging in oak, it acquired deeper golden colour. Intense, and aromatic on the nose, we can sense fully ripe Sauvignon Blanc which have almost lost its typical green edge, with notes of gooseberry, blood peaches, as well as mango and passion fruit with touch of oak. Compact. Dry on the palate medium to full bodied with good level of ripe acidities. There is a nice fume touch and plenty of taste due to both – very ripe grapes and gentle oak ageing, If vintage 2017 made a masculine and full bodied wine, 2018 is much more on the elegant side. With a long finish, where the aroma is diminishing in a long and slow decrescendo. First class!
2018 was marked by huge downy mildew pressure in June, followed by a period of warm and dry weather in July and August. Rain in early September rushed winegrowers to pick early ripening varieties quickly while late-ripening varieties enjoyed a nice warm Indian summer. Wines of 2018 vintage in our winery are marked by low to moderate alcohol levels, vibrant acidities and clear, defined varietal characteristics. A classic Styrian vintage.
Pairing with food: Full body and intense character call for dishes with similar attributes. Main courses with white meat and spicy sauces. Chicken curry. One might well try a smoked trout or even salmon.
