Wine region: Styria – Slovenia
Variety: 100% chardonnay
Maturation: 24 months in used, 600 l French oak barrels. Lees, stirring.
Produced only in exceptional years. After 2008, 2011 and 2015 this is the fourth Chardonnay “V” we have made. The colour is deep golden. Intense on the nose which clearly, without any doubt speaks of a rich, full, oak aged “Chardonnay” matured on the fine less. Butter, bread crust, ripe quince, apricots, and ripe continental fruits. Fine and varied.
Dry on the palate, fuller bodied with good structure and nice texture. Higher acidity levels clearly speak of its cool climate origin. Character is intense, diverse, with a nice touch of minerality and good persistence. It opens greatly on the palate very much in the style of classy Meursaults showing an extra complexity. Not easy to grasp in one swing. A Chardonnay with a capital “C”, which needs no extra explanation.
2017 vintage brought a very warm summer and one of the earliest starts of the harvest. In mid-September grapes were affected by a longer period of rain. Early ripening varieties fared much better, while late-ripening varieties had much less quantity.
Pairing with food: Grilled seafood, fish, mussels, white meat and main dishes with fine sauces.
